Crimes of Disrespect

This completed manuscript (83,000 words) is a double-plot mystery whose comparable titles include Kate Atkinson's STARTED EARLY, TOOK MY DOG (2010) and Denise Mina's THE END OF THE WASP SEASON (2011).

Twenty-four-year-old Sol Fitzgerald, a disadvantaged ex-con working as a janitor, gets implicated in the murder of Pamela Renard, a brilliant Mohawk schoolgirl. To clear his name, Sol begins an investigation that ranges from the elite private school where he works to Pamela's nearby Indian reservation, which is embroiled in a violent land protest.

Working (usually at odds) with Sol is Alison Downie, an African Canadian detective with the Halton Region police west of Toronto. The case appears racially motivated, but Sol and Alison both suspect the truth may be something stranger, more sinister.

This work-in-progress is a realistic thriller about a guard in a nuclear lab that produces medical isotopes; the unhinged sentry plans to poison hundreds at a beauty pageant.
